Argon, helium and other noble gases containing water vapour, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen or hydrocarbons as impurities, are purified by passing through a chamber containing depleted uranium (i.e. atomic reactor waste) bringing the gas into intimate contact therewith at 200-1200 DEG C. The chamber consists of a number of gettering zones operating at different temperatures for the removal of different impurities in one passage through the apparatus. The gas may be preheated by passing through a succession of heat exchangers in the form of concentric shells surrounding the chamber; it is also cooled before leaving the chamber for removal of hydrogen.
|
