<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical device to illuminate a specific area during an operation of an eye, in particular, an improved variable luminous intensity, small aperture and wide-angle illuminator to illuminate a surgical field. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator is provided with: a handpiece optically coupled to a light source to receive a light beam from the light source; an optical fiber operably coupled to the handpiece and to receive the light beam from the light source; an optical device which is connected to the distal end of the optical fiber, receives and scatters the optical beam to illuminate the surgical field, and is equipped with a hemispherical sapphire piece; and a cannula to house and guide the optical fiber and the optical element. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
