PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a hydrogen storage material from getting poisoned due to moisture contained in hydrogen produced by water electrolysis, or the like, and to prevent deterioration of the performance of the hydrogen storage material. SOLUTION: A metallic plating film containing fine particles of a water-repellent resin is formed on the surface of hydrogen storage alloy powder as the hydrogen storage material. Fluororesin such as polytetrafluoroethylene is desirably used as the water repellent resin. The plating metal is selected from among Ni, Ni alloy, Cu, Cu alloy, Co and Co alloy. The hydrogen storage material is obtained by dispersing the water-repellent resin fine particles into a pyrophosphoric acid electrolytic bath and applying electrolytic plating on the hydrogen storage alloy particles in the electrolytic bath. The hydrogen storage material in which not only the degradation due to impurity gas, in particular, water vapor but also the degradation due to the moisture (liquid) produced by dew condensation is suppressed can be used.
