The invention relates to pharmaceutical formulations of xanthogenates and agents containing said formulations for use in the treatment of viral, cance r or autoimmune diseases. The pharmaceutical formulations contain a xanthogena te of formula (I), wherein R1 represents an optionally substituted aryl or alky l group and R2 represents a metal atom, an optionally substituted alkyl, alkox y, amino or ammonium group or halogen, and an inhibitor of viral nucleic acid replication such as e.g. aciclovir, valaciclovir, penciclovir, famciclovir, and optionally an excipient which reduces the irritating effects of xanthogenate and optionally an activity-increasing adjuvant.
