The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and Z is a carbonyl or b -hydroxymethylene group, and their preparation by (a) reduction of 6-benzyl-6 - aza - 8(9) -dehydro - estradiol or 6 - b - p-tosyl-6-aza-8(9)-dehydroestrone (b) reduction or oxidation at the 17-position or (c) 3-demethylation. The compounds of the invention have blood cholesterol-lowering, estrogenic and carcinomiapalliating activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration.
