An automotive air bag passenger head restraint system has two layers (18, 20) of crossing laces other over an air bag. The laces are held in position by a side-lace (22) that is removed automatically in a collision, allowing inflation of the bag. The cross-thread array has three or more threads (18, 20, 22), one of which (22) is a rip-thread.
