<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal cell is accurately optically compensated and of which the layered structure is made thin. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has: two sheets of polarizing films 1, 12 with absorption axes 2, 13 perpendicularly intersecting with each other; the liquid crystal cell having a pair of substrates 5, 8 and liquid crystalline molecules 7 interposed between the substrates between the two sheets of polarizing films 1, 12 wherein the liquid crystalline molecules 7 are aligned in a direction nearly vertical to the substrates 1, 12 in a non-driven state with no external electric field applied thereto; a liquid crystal composition which has optically positive birefringence and contains two or more kinds of polymerizable rod shaped liquid crystalline compounds; at least a layer of a first optically anisotropic layer 3 which has 40-150 nm Re defined as written below with respect to a visible ray; and at least a layer of a second optically anisotropic layer 10 which has optically negative birefringence and which has ≤10 nm Re defined as written below with respect to the visible ray and 60-250 nm Rth.
