<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a currency handling apparatus capable of preventing the accumulation of balance abnormality and easily restoring from the balance abnormality by inhibiting residue recovery when the balance abnormality exists. <P>SOLUTION: A control unit U performs the following control for each denomination. That is, the control unit U manages storing part balances (X1) which are the numbers of bills stored in respective storage parts B to D, a payment rejection part balance (X2) which is the number of bills stored in a payment rejection part F and an inside balance (X=X1+X2) which is the sum of the X1 and X2, and judges whether the inside balance is normal. When judging the normality of the inside balance when a recovery instruction is outputted from a recovery instruction part 11a, either one of residue recovery processing or full recovery processing is performed in accordance with the instruction from the recovery instruction means.
