A spring (2) measurement method takes (9) an image (5) of the spring made on a winding machine (1) from an endless metal wire (16), compares it with an image of the machine without spring by removing all unchanged parts and measuring the spring in the purified image and reclassifies (13) the spring if the length or diameter difference exceeds a threshold. Independent claims are included for equipment using the procedure and for inclusion in the procedure of a process for removing background dirt from images by using the spring edge as an exclusion boundary.
