<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable unit of a vehicle electronic key system and the vehicle electronic key system capable of making security and convenience of the vehicle electronic key system compatible. <P>SOLUTION: In the vehicle electronic key system, an emergency key 37 is stored in a storage section 39 provided to a body 21 of the portable unit 3 carried by a user, but a transponder 41 transmitting a key registration authentication ID code for making a device mounted on the vehicle recognize the user as the registered user in the case the portable unit is additionally registered is incorporated into the emergency key 37 other than a transponder 35 provided to the inside of the portable unit body 21 as a communication means.
