The control of the melting of glass in a furnace uses at least one diode laser to measure the H2O and O2 concentrations and temperature in the melting zone of the glass furnace. The process may use a number of diode lasers at different points along the refining zone of the glass furnace, the diode lasers being placed 2-50 cm, preferably 5-20 cm, above the surface of the molten glass.
