The invention relates to a combustion engine comprising at least one cylinder (3). A fuel/air mixture can be compressed inside the cylinder (3) by a piston (4), whereby the ignition of the combustion ensues in a temporally controlled manner by introducing laser light (S1, S2) into the combustion chamber (8). The laser light (S1, S2) for igniting the fuel/air mixture can be focussed into the combustion chamber (8) by at least one lens system (7, 7'), which is essentially free of optical aberration or which is corrected for optical aberration. The lens system has an f-number less than or equal to approximately 10, preferably less than 1.3 and/or the laser light is focussed onto a focus area smaller than 60 x 10<-6> mm<2>. |
