A processor unit reads in stored data from a data carrier in which they are stored in at least two areas, a different operating mode being used to reproduce data from each area. A device switches from one operating mode to the other. The data carrier is preferably a CD or DVD. The first operating mode is a standard mode, while the second operating mode is a multi-session mode.
