PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a particulate substance measuring method which enables the measurement of soot in a particulate substance mainly discharge from an engine with high precision at a low cost, and a measuring instrument therefor. SOLUTION: The gas G discharged from an internal combustion engine 1 is sampled and charge (e) is applied to the soot 2a in the particulate substance 2 contained in the sample gas S to measure the charge quantity of the soot 2a.
