Producing synthesis gas from a feed rich in organic matter involves pyrolyzing the feed to produce an effluent comprising a solid phase and a gas phase containing incondensable gases and heavy hydrocarbons, separating the constituents of the effluent, and subjecting at least part of the constituents of at least one of the phases to partial oxidation. An independent claim is also included for an installation for converting a feed rich in organic matter, comprising a pyrolysis reactor (1), separators (3, 5) for separating the pyrolysis products into a product gas (13), a heavy hydrocarbon stream (7) and a solid phase (4), a partial oxidation reactor (8), and a recycle line (9) for passing the effluent from the partial oxidation reactor to the pyrolysis reactor.
