A straight-bar machine has two groups 51A, 51B, Fig. 4, of transfer points selectively operable to engage the loops of a rib welt on the needles and transfer them inwardly in successive groups as illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8, before the commencement of the knitting of plain fabric so that loop doubling is achieved as at LO .. LO5 and the rib portion has its loops restricted to a smaller number of needles for the continuation of the plain fabric. The transfer points are individually slidable on the narrowing head and are selectively controlled by bars 190, 191 which are controlled by lead screws to engage beneath butts on the transfer points and prevent them being lowered into an operative position. The remaining points follow a normal loop transfer motion when the narrowing head is operated. Alternatively the points can be operated by solenoids. |
