The on-board electrical system has first and second voltage levels (30,36) and a generator (10), whereby the voltage levels can be coupled together via a first coupling device (32,66) that contains a longitudinal regulator (32), which can be connected in parallel with a d.c. to d.c. converter (66). The d.c. to d.c. converter is configured to provide the second voltage level for a definable base load that does not correspond to the peak load.
