Exhaust gas re-circulation unit (EGRCU) (3) feeds a portion of fuel cell (10) exhaust gas to a fuel cell feeder gas preparation device so as to use gaseous water contained in the exhaust gas. The EGRCU supplies anode and/or cathode exhaust gases as the exhaust gas and has a reuniting device (17) for anode and cathode exhaust gases and a dosing device (18). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
