PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material capable of obtaining a high friction coefficientμs by changing the hardness between upper and lower portions and enhancing a positive gradient performance ofμ-V characteristics. SOLUTION: The friction material is formed by integrally affixing upper and lower members to each other. The upper member is formed by impregnating oil-denatured phenol resin of about 20 wt.% in a paper-making body obtained by paper-making base fibers, and fillers such as friction conditioner and extender pigment, and performing heat-setting thereof, and the thickness thereof is 0.37 mm. The lower member is formed by impregnating regular phenol resin of about 40 wt.% in a paper-making body, and performing heat-setting thereof, and the thickness thereof is 0.63 mm. The upper and lower members are affixed to each other by using adhesive of excellent oil resistance, heat resistance and pressure resistance to manufacture an integrated wet type friction material of 1 mm thick. A friction test is carried out under the condition of the bearing pressure of 500 kPa and the oil temperature of 40°C at three points of the number of rotation of 1 rpm, 50 rpm and 150 rpm, resulting in the higher friction coefficientμs and the excellent positive gradient performance ofμ-V characteristics.
