The fuel cell system has interconnected cells (6a-d) in a stack. The starter system for the fuel cells has the first cell supplied with electrical current from a power supply (8) as a first phase operation. Once the first stage has started a second phase has current supplied to the second cell. Further steps see the other cells supplied.
