<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element of which the viewing angle characteristics is improved and further the cost is reduced. <P>SOLUTION: The circularly polarized light initiated liquid crystal display element with a vertical alignment mode is constructed with a light source BL, a circular polarizer structure P containing a first polarizing plate 6 and a first retardation plate 4, a variable retarder structure VR containing a liquid crystal cell C and a circular analyzer structure A containing a second polarizing plate 5 and a second retardation plate 3 in sequence. The first and second retardation plates 4, 3 are uniaxial quarter-wave plates imparting 1/4 wavelength retardation between light with a specified wavelength passing through a fast axis and that passing through a slow axis. The liquid crystal display element is characterized by disposing an optically uniaxial third retardation plate 2 with anisotropy of refractive indexes satisfying a relation nx>ny=nz between the first polarizing plate 6 and the first retardation plate 4 so as to make its slow axis nearly parallel to the transmission axis of the first polarizing plate 6 and further an optically negative and uniaxial fourth retardation plate 1 with anisotropy of refractive indexes satisfying a relation nx=ny>nz between the liquid crystal cell C and the first retardation plate 4 or the second retardation plate 3. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
