PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type video display device for realizing automatic focusing in different modes in compliance with user's requirements. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 25 gives a driving signal to a focus motor 22 and samples the image pickup signal of a sensor 29 to generate contrast data, and then acquires temporal information (positional information of a focusing lens) obtained when the most excellent contrast data is obtained. The microcomputer 25 gives a pull-in direction driving signal to the motor 22 (quick mode) for the time obtained by subtracting the temporal information from all of the time during which an extending direction driving signal is given to the motor 22. In a detail mode, after the above operation, the microcomputer 25 judges the new best focus position (the position of the focusing lens) by performing the sampling further while driving a projection lens within a prescribed range, and performs focusing by driving the motor 22 based on the result of the judgment.
