A tensioner (2, 50, 53, 58, 66) for a belt (19) of a drive (1) for a motor vehicle, comprises at least two idler pulleys (16, 17), which can turn about respective axes (B, C) and are designed to co-operate with respective branches (20, 22) of the belt (19), said tensioner comprising a connection device (12), which constrains the idler pulleys (16, 17) to one another so that one of the pulleys, for example (16), is displaced in a way dependent upon the displacement of another (17) of the pulleys, and so that, starting from a resting position, in which the tension is substantially uniform along the belt (19), a displacement of the idler pulleys (16, 17) tends to produce a lengthening of the belt (19).
