PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a correct residual liquid quantity detector which is free from a judgement error without the use of a complicated circuit, and to provide a method for detecting a residual liquid quantity. SOLUTION: In this residual liquid quantity detector, metal sheets 3(3a and 3b) of the same quality are attached to the inner wall and the outer wall of a vessel respectively and are heated by the same quantity of heat for a specified time. The metal sheet 3a attached to the inner wall of the vessel is soaked in a liquid in case the vessel is filled with the liquid, and the temperature climbing rate is low as the energy of generated heat is deprived by the liquid. Since the metal sheet 3b attached to the outer wall of the vessel is not influenced by the liquid inside the vessel, the temperature is increased only by the heat conduction of the metal sheet 3b. Thus, the temperature climbing rate is higher than the rate of the metal sheet 3a attached to the inner wall of the vessel. When the liquid is not present inside the vessel, however, the temperature climbing rate of the metal sheet 3a attached to the inner wall of the vessel is almost the same as the rate of the metal sheet 3b attached to the outer wall of the vessel.
