The method involves segmenting the image into multiple, two-dimensional sub-images (202), the size of the sub-image being based on the available energy in the laser pulse. The data carrier is sequentially marked with the sub-images, forming the entire image. To mark each sub-image, the data carrier is pulsed with a two-dimensional pulse distribution using a light modulator. An independent claim is included for a laser marking system.
