PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the unevenness of recording characteristics even in a high-density optical recording medium by providing an initialization system for the optical recording medium capable of realizing the initialization while suppressing the initialization unevenness. SOLUTION: The initialization system for the phase change optical recording medium puts the optical recording medium into an initialized state to make optical recording possible by irradiating the recording film of the phase change optical recording medium with a light beam thereby crystallizing the recording film and is characterized in that the intensity distribution in the longitudinal direction of the beam spot formed by the light is gradually increased from the front end in the scanning direction of the beam spot to a position of≥1/2 to≤4/5 of the overall length in the longitudinal direction of the beam spot and is thereafter approximately uniform up to the terminal in the longitudinal direction and that the feed pitch of the beam spot is set smaller than the width at which the intensity distribution in the longitudinal direction of the beam spot is made approximately uniform.
