Removal of sulfur comprises contacting emission gases with water and absorption of sulfur dioxide by continuously passing gases in countercurrent to moving water flow and continuously withdrawing sulfur dioxide-saturated water solution. The latter is cooled to temperature between -5 and +5 to form solid-phase sulfur dioxide crystal hydrates. Precipitate is separated from wash water and melted. Gas-phase melting products of sulfur dioxide crystal hydrates are freed of water and then liquefied by cooling resulting from adiabatic expansion or throttling.
