An intake air amount control device of an internal combustion engine capable of increasing operability and improving exhaust emission characteristics by securing high robustness and increasing controllability in intake air amount control. The control device (1) of the internal combustion engine (3) variab ly controlling intake air amount sucked into cylinders #1 to #4 through a variable intake valve drive device (40) comprises an ECU (2). The ECU (2) calculates a cylinder intake air amount (Gcy1) and a target intake air amoun t (Gcy1_cmd) (step 16), identifies the vectors (.theta.s) of all model parameters of a model to be controlled by identification algorithms [equatio ns (8) to (13)] based on the model to be controlled [equation (2)] and calculat es a target auxiliary intake cam phase (.theta.msi_cmd) by sliding mode control algorithms [equations (15) to (21)] according to the vectors (.theta.s) (ste p 80), and controls the variable intake valve drive device (40) according to t he target auxiliary intake cam phase (.theta.msi_cmd).
