OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATION SYSTEM USING REMOTE PUMPING

An optical fiber communication system using a remote pumping is intended to improve the pumping efficiency and reduce the noise figure. A multiplexer (20) of a linear repeater (18) multiplexes and outputs a signal light and a pumped light from a pumped light source (19). The outputted signal light and pumped light travel through transmission fibers (22-24) and remote pumping modules (27F,27R) to a linear repeater (25). A multiplexer (30) of the linear repeater (25) multiplexes and outputs a signal light and a pumped light from a pumped light source (29) to the transmission fiber (24). The remote pumping module (27F) demultiplexes from the signal light the pumped light propagating through the transmission fiber (22), and bifurcates the pumped light as demultiplexed, using a desired ratio. Then, the pumped lights as bifurcated are multiplexed with the signal light, and thereafter applied to the two ends of an erbium doped fiber. The module (27R) is adapted to function in the same manner.
