[Also in Divisions A2 and A5] The invention comprises novel compounds of the general formula wherein X = OH, Cl, Br, -OR, -O-CO-R<SP>1</SP>, or -SR<SP>11</SP>, R = optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, optionally substituted aryl or dichloromaleic imidomethyl; R<SP>1</SP> = optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, optionally substituted aryl, alkoxy or aroxy; R<SP>11</SP> = alkyl or optionally substituted aryl. (N - Hydroxymethyl) - dichloromaleic imide may be prepared by reacting dichloromaleic imide with an excess of formaldehyde. This product may then be chlorinated or brominated to yield the (N-chloromethyl)- or (N-bromomethyl) derivative. Compounds with X = OR, -SR<SP>11</SP> and -O-CO-R<SP>1</SP> may be prepared by reacting N-chloro methyl dichloromaleic imide with R-OH, R<SP>11</SP>-SH and R<SP>1</SP>COCl (or R<SP>1</SP>CO-O-COR<SP>1</SP>) respectively. The compounds prepared in the examples have X = OH, Cl, Br, -OC 2 H 5 , -OCH 3 , -OCOCH 3 , -OC 3 H 7 , -OCH(CH 3 ) 2 , -OC 4 H 9 and -OCH 2 CH(CH 3 ) 2 . Dichloromaleic imide may be prepared by reacting dichloromaleic anhydride with urea.</p> |
