The present invention generally provides a hydrogen gettering agent 22 containing fullerene mollecules 25, a protected optical fiber cable 10 containing the hydrogen gettering agent and a method of making the same. According to some embodiments, the protected optical fiber cable is provided comprising a protective sheath 13, at least one optical fiber 16,17 positioned within the protective sheath, and the hydrogen gettering agent surrounding the at least one optical fiber within the protective sheath. The cable may also comprise a barrier of low hydrogen permeability 19, a fibre in metal tube core 11, buffer matterial 35, an outer tube 38 and an over coating 21. Also disclosed is the use of the cable in down-hole environments having one end coupled to sensor 28 and the second end coupled to processing equipment 30. |
