PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for managing a text message by using a phone book are provided to allow a user to easily search a received or originated text message by storing the text message according to each group. CONSTITUTION: A message receiving unit(10) receives a text message from a base station. A message managing unit(20) transmits the text message to a field corresponding to a caller number of a phone book(30) according to the caller number included in the received text message. The phone book(30) stores the corresponding text message in the field of the caller number of the text message. A newly received text message can be stored only in a text message keeping box(40) or only in the phone book(30) or both in the text message keeping box(40) and in the phone book(30), according to user's setting.
