PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion device and method capable of efficiently burning a biomass that is an inexpensive coal alternative fuel in a coal thermal power generation system, an industrial boiler, or the like. SOLUTION: This combustion device for supplying and burning the biomass 11 in a furnace body 12 comprises a burner 14 having an evaporation means 13 for evaporating the supplied biomass 11. The evaporation means 13 comprises a biomass filling chamber 21 for temporarily filling the supplied biomass 11, which has a tip 21a opened into the furnace, and a steam or gas introduction means 23 for evaporating the biomass 11 in the biomass filling chamber 21 and supplying steam or a gas 22 with low oxygen concentration for releasing the biomass 11 from the filling chamber 21.
