PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device for which a plurality of aberrations, such as the curvature of field, distortion aberration, etc., can be corrected in well balanced states and which is high in resolution while the device has a small size. SOLUTION: The image pickup device 10 contains an optical image pickup system 11 and an image pickup element 12 which receives the light passed through the system 11. The image pickup element 12 has a polynomial surface curved in the thickness direction. For example, the line of intersection X of a plane containing the optical axis of the optical image pickup system 11 and the image pickup element 12 is expressed by X=B<SB>1</SB>Y<SP>2</SP>+B<SB>2</SB>Y<SP>3</SP>.
