<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem on failure in starting, accidental fire and the like caused by the impairing of combustion stability by an excessive residual gas, when the valve overlap is applied in the failure of the operation of the variable valve timing mechanism 30. <P>SOLUTION: This variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine comprises a variable valve timing mechanism 30 for changing the valve timing of an air intake valve 18, and a variable valve lift mechanism 20 for changing an operating angle/valve lift amount of the air intake valve.
