PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device and a liquid crystal display capable of restraining difference of brightness of irradiating faces without enlarging a picture frame even in case lamps are arrayed in a narrow pitch. SOLUTION: A narrowing of the picture frame of the liquid crystal display can be realized by restraining an increase of the size of an inverter base plate 12 in an arraying direction of the lamps even in case the lamps 10 are arrayed in a narrow pitch, by fitting an inverter base plate 12 of the backlight device illuminating a liquid crystal panel divided at both end parts of the lamps 10, not by placing the inverter base plate 12 at one end of the lamps 10. At the same time, by dividing the plurality of lamps 10 into two sets and connecting them with the inverter base plates 12 respectively, a part with high brightness of the lamps 10 are uniformly arranged to uniformize brightness on the irradiation face, and the crystal display device of a high display quality is realized.
