PURPOSE: To embody a multicolor display which is bright and is extremely colorful by coloring light without using color filters and displaying white and black which are the fundamental of display and three primary colors of red, green and blue. CONSTITUTION: This color liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal cell 10 formed by twist-orienting liquid crystal molecules 90 deg., polarizing plates 21, 22, a reflection plate 20 and phase difference plates 23, 24. The Δnd of the liquid crystal cell 10, the retardation of the phase difference plates 23, 24, the transmission axis of the polarizing plates 21, 22 and the direction of the delay phase axes of the phase difference plates 23, 24 are so set that the colors of exit light change to red, green, blue, black and white according to impressed voltage. The transmission axis of the one polarizing plate 21 with respect to the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules near the one substrate 11 of the liquid crystal cell 10 is set in the direction of 110 to 130 deg. in a direction reverse from the twist direction of the liquid crystal molecules. The transmission axis of the other polarizing plate 22 is set in a direction of 127 to 140 deg. in a direction reverse from the twist direction of the liquid crystal molecules. |
