Emulation of hardware devices in a pre-boot environment

A method and system to emulate a hardware device of a computer system. A missing device not present in a computer system is emulated by a device emulator. A request is made to access the missing device of the computer system and the request is serviced by the device emulator. In one embodiment, a floppy disk drive is emulated by a Random Access Memory (RAM) drive. The RAM drive is loaded with data anticipated to be requested from the floppy disk drive. A request to access the floppy disk drive is directed to the RAM drive by firmware executable by the computer system. In another embodiment, the firmware of the computer system operates in accordance with the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) framework standard to emulate a hardware device.
