The present invention concerns a system for sampling body fluids, comprising an implantable catheter for introduction into tissue, a pump means for transporting a volume of said body fluid out of the catheter, a volume determination unit for determining said volume of fluid and a control means (70) for controlling the pump means based on the determined volume of body fluid. Alternatively to volume determination and control the invention proposes to sample with an overall flow rate of below 10 nanoliters per minute or to sample below 50 nanoliters per sampling event.
