PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus and a method for applying a coating liquid, by which a stable thin coating film is formed on the object, which is to be coated and is conveyed continuously or in a sheet-fed system, by using an ink-jet head and discharging the coating liquid from a discharge port of a nozzle as liquid droplets. SOLUTION: This coating apparatus is constituted so that the ink-jet head for discharging the coating liquid from the discharge port of the nozzle as liquid droplets is used and the coating liquid is applied to the object to be coated. This coating apparatus is provided with a conveying mechanism which has a planar portion of 10-200 mm including the portion to be coated and its preceding and succeeding portions and by which the object to be coated is conveyed linearly.
