<p>A method of determining the suitability of a patient in need of a drug to receive that drug to avoid the occurrence of an adverse side effect known or suspected of being caused by said drug is disclosed, wherein said method is of the type in which prescriptions for said drug are filled only after a computer readable storage medium has been consulted through a computer to assure that the prescriber is registered in said medium and qualified to prescribe said drug, that the pharmacy is registered in said medium and qualified to fill the prescription for said drug, that the patient is registered in said medium and approved to receive said drug, said method additionally comprising: (a) inputting into said computer readable storage medium a risk group assignment for the patient for said drug, said risk group being based on a comparison of a predefined set of risk parameters for the drug with a set of information obtained from the patient that is probative of the risk that said adverse side effect is likely to occur if the drug is taken by the patient; and (b) consulting the computer readable storage medium for approval to dispense the drug to the patient, wherein upon a determination that said risk is acceptable, a prescription approval code is generated by the computer permitting a prescription for the drug to be filled.</p> |
