PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture display device in which switchover among respective colors is scarcely recognizable and with which eyestrain and feeling of nuisance given to the viewer of the picture are alleviated, and a light source for the picture display device. SOLUTION: The picture display device (1) has three light sources (2R, 2G, 2B) respectively emitting light rays of three color components and a light source controlling means (8) and displays a color picture by sequentially or randomly turning on the three light sources with time division. The emitted light rays from the three light sources are modulated with a modulating means (10) controlled by a picture controlling means (14) and are projected on a screen (S) by a projection lens (12). The light source controlling means turns on at least one out of the three light sources at least twice within a period of one field to display a picture of one frame. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
