METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LUMINANCE ADJUSTING AND IMAGE OUTPUT APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply luminance adjustment to input image data so that the luminance range of the input image data may correspond to the luminance range of output devices.

SOLUTION: A luminance adjustment apparatus 120 calculates the luminance value of each pixel of the input image data to be subjected to luminance adjustment and input luminance range of all the pixels, and compares the input luminance range with the luminance range of the previously prepared output devices. When the input luminance range does not match the luminance ranges of the output devices 161-165 to which the data are outputted, a luminance adjustment amount is corrected so that the luminance values of all the pixels of the input image data may match the luminance range of the output devices, and that the larger the saturation of each pixel of the input image data is, the smaller the luminance adjustment amount becomes. The luminance value of each pixel of the input image data is adjusted by using the luminance adjustment amount.
