New polymer-chromophore complexes with third order non-linear optical properties have an ammonium cation with polymer chain(s) and chromophore anion derived from a 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- or 1-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)-5-(het)aryl-penta-1,4-dien-3-one, -but-1-en-3-one or -2-(1-keto-tetralin-2-yl)-ethene compound. New polymer-chromophore complexes with third order non-linear optical properties are of structure (1). [Image] R1>, R2>, R3>a polymer chain attached to the N atom by a -CH2- group in at least one case, otherwise R*; R* : H, alkyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl or an alkoxylated oligomer chain; and O-X : an anion derived from a 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- or 1-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)-5-(het)aryl-penta-1,4-dien-3-one, -but-1-en-3-one or -2-(1-keto-tetralin-2-yl)-ethene compound.
