PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an electric vehicle capable of realizing the miniaturization. SOLUTION: In the controller for the electric vehicle, regenerative power in an AC is returned to an overhead wire 1 in the AC via a second converter 12, a first converter 6, and a transformer 4. The regenerative power in a DC is returned to an overhead wire 15 in the DC via the second converter 12. The controller for the electric vehicle is provided with a brake resistor 19 which consumes the regenerative power when the regenerative power in the DC can not be returned to the overhead wire 15, and a resistor connection switch 18 which connects the brake resistor 19 in parallel to any one of upper and lower arms 9a, 9b, 10a, and 10b constituting the U phase or the V phase of the first converter 6. The brake resistor 19 is made to consume the regenerative power by making the upper and lower arms on the side, to which the brake resistor 19 is connected, as a brake chopper circuit.
