PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording and reproducing device capable of performing reproduction in parallel while recording a broadcast program or the like necessary for recording it at high transfer rate as in the case of a program of an HD system, and a control method for the data recording and reproducing device. SOLUTION: The data recording and reproducing device is provided with first and second data recording and reproducing parts 1, 2, a transfer rate evaluation part 21 for evaluating whether or not a transfer rate to the first data recording and reproducing part is larger than the maximum data transfer rate of the first data recording and reproducing part, and recording and reproduction control part 22. When the transfer rate is smaller than the maximum data transfer rate of the first data recording and reproducing part, the recording and reproduction control part 22 controls the first data recording and reproducing part 1 so as to perform recording and reproduction to the second data recording and reproducing part 1 at the same time. Also, when the transfer rate exceeds the maximum data transfer rate, the control part stops the recording operation of the first data recording and reproducing part 1 to perform only the reproducing operation thereof, and also performs the recording operation to the second data recording and reproducing part 2.
