<p>The emulsifier resin used in alkyd resin emulsions is a water-soluble alkyd resin obtained by esterifying a miscible alkyd resin with the adduct of a 1-4C alkoxy-polyethylene glycol and a cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic anhydride. Alkyd resin emulsion (I) for topcoats, containing a water-insoluble alkyd resin (A) and a water-soluble alkyd resin (B) (emulsifier resin), in which (B) is the esterification product of an alkyd resin (Ba) which is homogeneously miscible with (A), at least in the wt. range (Ba:A) of (2:98)-(50:50), and an adduct (Bb) of a 1-4C alkoxy-polyethylene glycol (Bba) and a cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic anhydride (Bbb) in a mol ratio (Bba:Bbb) of (0.95:1.05)-(1.05:0.95). An independent claim is also included for a method for the production of (I) by (a) mixing 70-95 wt% (Bba) (wt.-average mol. wt. = 500-4000) with 5-30 wt% (Bbb) in the above range of mol ratios and reacting in presence of a catalyst, with ring-opening of the anhydride, to give adduct (Bb), (b) esterifying 40-75 wt% of (Bb) with 25-60 wt% alkyd resin (Ba) to form resin (B), (c) mixing 30-60 wt% (B) with water to give a mixture with a dynamic viscosity (at 23[deg]C and 100 s -> 1>) of 5-50 Pa.s and (d) mixing resin (A) with the mixture of water and (B) at below 100C and diluting with water to give an emulsion with a solid content of 40-75 wt% and a dynamic viscosity of 200-3000 mPa.s.</p> |
