Method and apparatus for achieving prolonged battery life

Compositions for prolonging battery life by reducing corrosion of the battery components are disclosed. The compositions may comprise amine or quaternary ammonium compounds. The compositions may also reduce electrolytic decomposition of the battery electrolyte (gassing) and may reduce deposits on the cell components. The compositions are maintained at an appropriate concentration in the electrolyte by a variety of methods including the introduction of a mixture of water and composition via a reservoir (arrangements may be made for automatic topping up). The compositions may also be provided in sachets which are periodically emptied into the battery. The compositions may be added to the electrolyte as slow release microcapsules or in an at least partially porous container, which is either dropped into the electrolyte or is integrally formed with the rest of the battery. Finally the compositions may be impregnated into one or more battery components.
