PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing plate sheet-by-sheet suction device for accurately detecting that no printing plate stored in a cassette exists and actualizing the detection without complicating its construction, and a printing plate protection sheet. SOLUTION: In the sheet-by-sheet suction device 50, a plate surface detecting bar 45 is provided to be moved together with a sucker 40 and a through hole 43 is formed in a slip sheet 13 corresponding to an empty detection hole 41 of the cassette 38. When the lowest-layer slip sheet 13 only remains with no printing plate 12 in the cassette 38, the plate surface detecting bar 45 goes through the through hole 43 as it is with the movement of the sucker 40 and passes through the empty detection hole 41 of the cassette 38. The "relative movement" of the plate surface detection bar 45 prevents the misdetection that the printing plate 12 still remains, permitting accurate detection that no printing plate 12 stored in the cassette 38 exists.
