<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new bioluminescent assay and a bacterial strain useful therein. <P>SOLUTION: The present invention relates to new assays for assessing the degree of metabolic activity of a cell. Mutagenicity assays and, more specifically, methods for determining whether a given agent is genotoxic or not are also provided.
